Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has disclosed details of policies it seeks to reform in the judicial sector. The details were disclosed by Legal Director of the main ruling party Hisaan Hussain at MDP policy workshop.
Delivering the details, Hisaan Hussain stated it will be proposed to individualise Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), although the institution currently runs under the mandate of Supreme Court to allocate the department to answer to the committee on independent institutions of the Parliament.
MDP has also decided to grant major powers to registrars of courts in addition to shift authority to administrators from the courts in appointing registrars and formulating staff regulations. Recommendations were also made to the procedures the cases are handed out to judges. It was also proposed the Supreme Court cannot influence the cases filed at lower courts or take the files from the lower courts.
The main ruling party has also proposed to abolish the branches of High Court in the north and the south of the country and establish a district court in each atoll.
