JP to grant tickets to 7 re-instated parliamentarians without a primary

Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to grant tickets to 7 parliamentarians who were re-instated by the Supreme Court.

The 7 parliamentarians, who were given tickets without a primary, are among the 12-member bloc who were stripped of their membership for 1 and a half years. With the decision, the 7 parliamentarians will compete in the parliamentary elections from JP.

The 7 parliamentarians include Saud Hussain, Hussain Shahudhee, Mohamed Ameeth, Abdulla Ahmed, Ilham Ahmed, Mohamed Latheef and Ali Shah. The parliamentarians were expelled from the then ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), following an attempt to oust pro-government Parliament Speaker Abdullah Maseeh Mohamed via a parliamentary no-confidence motion.

In a tweet, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom revealed the leaders of the coalition parties have made a decision to grant tickets to the 12 parliamentarians without a primary.

Although JP and Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) have supported to gift tickets to the 12 parliamentarians, the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has distanced from the decision. MDP has also selected candidates to compete for the constituencies represented by the 12 parliamentarians.

Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the parliamentary elections will be held on April 6.
