Maldives launches a workshop for small island states

A workshop on Capacity Building for Preparation of Bankable Concept Notes for Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Discussion on Mobilisation of Private Sector Finance has commenced in Maldives.

The three-day workshop held in Champa Central Hotel was launched by Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan. The workshop is held jointly by Environment Ministry, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Ministry of the Environment of Japan.

Addressing the ceremony held to inaugurate the workshop, Environment Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan said Maldives currently produces 400 megawatts of energy, adding 16 megawatts or 4% is produced as renewable energy.

The environment minister stated Maldives need to produce more renewable energy and protect the environment. He revealed the small island states must produce renewable energy and set an example for the rest of the world.

The main aim of the workshop is to prepare bankable concept notes for (GCF) and to discuss the mobilisation of private sector finance. The workshop also aims to further encourage investors to invest in renewable energy sector.

The workshop is attended by 12 countries, in addition to Maldives.
