Maldives aim to increase renewable energy usage by 8% before end of the year

Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has revealed the aim of the administration is to increase the renewable energy usage by 8% before the end of the year.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the three-day workshop on Capacity Building for Preparation of Bankable Concept Notes for Green Climate Fund (GCF) and Discussion on Mobilisation of Private Sector Finance, Environment Minister Hussain Rasheed said the renewable energy usage in Maldives is at 4%.

Highlighting on the efforts of the government to encourage renewable energy use in Maldives, the minister said an energy efficiency guideline will pave the way for more sustainable buildings. He revealed the guideline will further enable seeking aid from financial facilities for energy efficiency projects, adding several projects are underway to enhance the renewable energy sector.

The energy efficiency guideline for housing of Maldives is being developed by a foreign firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers. The UK-based firm must complete the guideline within 11 months.

The guideline sets principles to improve sustainability in the conception, design, construction and maintenance of buildings. It will also outline principle-based performance guidance for energy standards for buildings that, once incorporated into standards, will support holistically designed and operated high-performance buildings as part of an integrated sustainable energy system.
