AG to seek foreign assistance to recover lost funds and assets

Attorney General's Office has revealed discussions are underway with foreign lawyers in recovering lost public funds and assets due to acts of corruption. A statement issued by Attorney General's Office noted recovering lost assets and funds must be given utmost priority, adding efforts are underway to secure foreign lawyers.

While it is an electoral pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, a Presidential Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery has been established to recuperate the lost assets of the state from January 1, 2012 till November 17, 2018. The commission also aims to ensure all responsible authorities carryout their legal duties in investigating corruption and abuse of power within the state institutions.

On January 15, Attorney General's Office sent evidential statements to Presidential Commission and Maldives Police Service indicating former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb were tied up in money laundering.

Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service is currently investigating a money laundering case related to former President Yameen. So far, he has been summoned and questioned three times.
