Male’ City Mayor Shifa Mohamed has revealed about USD 130,000 is spent on collecting waste dumped on the streets of the capital city.
Addressing the ceremony held by Ministry of Environment to hand over tress to Male’ City Council, Mayor Shifa spoke on the situation of waste in Male’. In this regard, she said efforts are being exerted at every level of the administration to solve issues related to waste, adding the biggest challenge is people dumping waste illegally on the roads.
The mayor stated in efforts to clean the roads and to collect the waste dumped illegally, each year USD 130,000 is spent by the state on average. She expressed efforts of every individual is crucial to effectively dump waste.
Meanwhile, the mayor also called to put forth individual responsibility to maintain the natural environment of Maldives which is beneficial for the tourism sector of the country.
In efforts to stop dumping waste on roads, Male’ City Council, with the assistance from Environment Protection Agency (EPA), has begun publicising the names of people who violate the rules. Furthermore, City Council has begun efforts to identify areas where waste is dumped the most.
During the event, environment ministry handed over more than 2,700 trees to Male' City Council, as part of the nationwide tree plantation programme. The trees are to be planted on Male’ Ring Road.
