Demands by Adeeb's family contradict set regulations: Home Minister

Minster of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated the demands by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb's family contradict set regulations regarding the treatment of convicts and that therefore, those demands cannot be met. The home minister made the statement addressing a press conference held at President's Office to announce a joint initiative by Ministry of Home Affairs, Maldives Correctional Service and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) to improve the health condition of detainees.

Home Minister Imran Abdulla said, in the past two months, the current administration has provided more opportunities for Adeeb to seek medical attention, than during the whole duration of his detention prior to that period. Answering a question posed by PSM regarding claims by Adeeb's family that authorities have been negligent in attending to the former vice president's medical needs, the home minister denied the allegations and reiterated there was no negligence in the part of any relevant institution. The minister also denied authorities harbouring personal vendetta against Adeeb. He maintained Adeeb is being afforded the highest luxuries that can be granted to a convict within legal limitations.

Minister Imran Abdulla added, instead of noting the improvement in how Adeeb is being treated during the current administration when compared to how he was being treated earlier, the family is citing demands that cannot be met. Imran reiterated that in order to ensure his treatment is maintained, arrangements have been made to visit his prison quarters for consultations as well. He denied allegations that Adeeb was discharged from hospital and taken back to prison in contradiction with doctors' orders.
