President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced cheaper and overarching housing solutions for the country.
Delivering the presidential address, President Solih revealed a Housing Needs Assessment is currently ongoing to pave the way for an equitable and solid solution to the lack of proper housing, following which a national policy on housing, targeting the entire country will be formulated and implemented this year.
The president announced efforts are underway to invite tenders to build 550 housing units in various islands and the construction of more than 1,500 units of housing that had been halted has reconvened. The president also announced the construction of 4,000 housing units in Hulhumale' for residents of Male' City. He vowed discrepancies around housing projects, including the Gulhifalhu project, will be settled.
President Solih also revealed efforts are underway to draft the Tenancy Act that outlines the regulations by which housing and apartments may be given for rent, and the Condominium Act that outlines the regulations on the sale of condominiums. He also announced the National Housing Corporation would be established to provide affordable housing at significantly lower prices than what was previously offered.
