Bill on Legal Protection of Heritage and Culture to be submitted to Parliament

President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reveals a bill on legal protection of heritage and culture will be submitted to the parliament this year. The president made the remarks speaking on the efforts of the administration to protect culture and heritage of Maldives during his maiden presidential address.

President Solih highlighted Maldives has a rich heritage and culture which needs to be preserved.

Furthermore, the president said local councils will be empowered to monitor historical monuments and museums housing historical artefacts. He assured documentation of heritage and culture with the help of state-of-the-art technology will begin this year.

While the administration aims to formulate bill on legal protection of heritage and culture, six mosques made of coral stones are included in the temporary heritage list of UNESCO. Recently, a laser scan of the Male' Friday Mosque was conducted for the first time.
