Corruption and injustice compromises national sovereignty: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has said one of the ways in which a country loses its sovereignty is a leadership's cruelty against its people. The home minister made the statement in the nationwide address delivered to mark Huravee Day 2019.

Huravee Day is marked to commemorate the uprising spearheaded by Sultan Hassan Izzuddeen, which saw the Maldives freed from the clutches of the Malabaris of India, after their brief occupation in 1752.

In his nationwide address, Home Minister Imran said corruption and injustice becoming such a common phenomenon, that the situation becomes unbearable to the masses, is when a country compromises its sovereignty. The minister said the basic pillar to ensure a country's safety is good leadership that is transparent and free from corruption. He also called on citizens to beware of factors that might compromise the sovereignty of the nation while strides are taken in development to keep up with the globalising world.

Home Minister Imran added Huravee Day and the events connected with the day teach that in order to protect the freedom and sovereignty of the state, each and every citizen needs to be one that loves the country.

Noting the truth of the situation is that some citizens who did not hesitate to sacrifice the country and its people in their lust for power, the minister urged to learn from history in order to ensure a brighter future. He highlighted the responsibility of shaping the future based on lessons from the past lie on the shoulders of policy makers, teachers and parents.
