Presidential Committee accuses previous administration of negligence on housing projects

Presidential Committee Investigating Issues related to Housing Projects has decided to publicise information about the recipients of flats under the social housing project initiated by the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Addressing a press conference held to disseminate information about the progress made so far, members of the committee revealed the previous administration was negligent to the rights of citizens in allocating the recipients of flats.

Member of the committee Fathimah Rasheedha said work is underway to gather all the application forms for all three social housing projects conducted by the previous administration and organise them. She added the committee has begun evaluating the application forms submitted under two categories of the Hiyaa Housing Project and that so far, evaluations show that some people have been awarded flats in contradiction of set criteria.

Addressing the press conference, committee member Mohamed Muizzu Adnan said the committee has also noticed the forms have not been properly stored at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. He said the forms were stored in a very disorderly fashion and that in fact, some forms were retrieved from a storage godown of the ministry.

In order to strengthen the work carried out by the committee, the members is to call for public grievances next week. The committee expressed confidence that its recommendations can be forwarded to the president within the next five months.

Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes was convened by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in efforts to investigate all issues related to the social housing projects initiated by the previous administration.
