Yameen transferred back to Mafushi Prison

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been transferred back to Mafushi Prison from hospital.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) hospitalised former President Yameen, who is under state custody until the end of his trial on allegations of money laundering. Yameen was brought for consultation late Wednesday.

Although Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) did not reveal why Yameen was brought to IGMH, Yameen has been admitted for 24 hours for observation. PSM News has learnt Yameen was admitted due to a heart problem. He was brought for a routine check-up, according to Parliamentary Group Leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.

Criminal Court ordered to place former President Yameen in custody until the end of trial on the money laundering charges raised by the state during the first hearing on the case. The Criminal Court made the decision following the request by Prosecutor General's Office saying Yameen may influence evidence and obstruct the investigation process.

Following the court order, the former president was taken to Mafushi Prison. His legal team has appealed the Criminal Court order for his detention.
