403 candidates to compete for 87 parliament seats

Elections Commission has revealed 403 candidates will be competing for 87 parliament seats in the upcoming parliamentary elections. However, the electoral body did not reveal any details regarding the candidates that have submitted documents to compete in the parliamentary elections to be held on April 6.

The main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will be competing for 86 constituencies, with independent candidates making up over one-third of the candidates.

The Elections Commission will announce the names and the candidate number of all 403 candidates on February 27. The commission has revealed 507 ballot boxes would be kept for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The electoral body said 264,589 people are eligible to vote in the parliamentary elections.
