Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has stated Maldives needs a lot of work before the country can reach the level of countries that boast quality education sectors. The minister made the statement addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Symposium on Reviewing the National Curriculum.
The education minister said the Maldivian national curriculum seems narrow in comparison with countries that have better schooling systems. The minister said in such systems the number of contact hours are relatively fewer. She also noted the limitations in the number of subjects offered and due to the lack of a variety of extra-curricular activities.
The minister said in additional to transforming all schools to single session schools, many other efforts would be required to reach the standards those countries offer. She also observed all reform to the education system was brought based on political undercurrents in the past.
