Opposition appeals to postpone parliamentary elections

The opposition coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) have asked to postpone the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for April 6.

Speaking at a press conference, interim president of PNC, Parliamentarian Abdul Raheem Abdulla said a suitable environment to hold a free and fair election is not ensured in Maldives. Speaking in this regard, Abdul Raheem revealed the coalition has asked the Elections Commission and the Parliament Secretariat to postpone the elections. Abdul Raheem accused the government aiming to hold the passports of senior members of PPM and PNC.

PPM requested to postpone the Local Council Elections in 2017, which was followed by a Civil Court order to postpone the elections.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference, President of Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef said there are no grounds to postpone the elections assuring the election will be held as per schedule.
