The State has received over USD 5 million as Green Tax in January.
The most amount as Green Tax was received from Kaafu Atoll which amounted to over USD 1.813 million, according to statistics of Ministry of Finance. The second most amount as Green Tax received from a single atoll was from Alifu Dhaalu Atoll which is about USD 590,000. Meanwhile, USD 408,000 was attained from Alifu Alifu Atoll as Green Tax.
Moreover, while the state received a total of over USD 4.532 million as green tax from resorts, over USD 65,000 and 195,000 were received from hotels and guest houses respectively. Furthermore, according to finance ministry, over USD 130,000 was attained from safaris during January.
Green tax is a tax payable by tourists who stay in tourist resorts, tourist hotels and tourist vessels. It is also payable by tourists who stay in tourist guesthouses from 1 October 2016 onwards. Green tax is payable at the rate of USD 6 per day of stay from tourist resorts, tourist hotels and tourist vessels, and USD 3 per day of stay from tourist guesthouses. Maldivians and resident permit holders are not required to pay Green Tax.
