Foreign Minister concludes visit to UAE to attend OIC meeting

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has arrived in Malé, after participating at the 46th Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Foreign Minister Shahid held several bilateral meetings with his counterparts at the side-lines of the meeting in Abu Dhabi. In this regard, Minister Shahid called on Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of UAE Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid offered his congratulations for the leadership of Sheikh Abdullah during his chairmanship of the 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC. The two ministers also discussed a range of issues, from increasing the intensity of bilateral contacts, to development cooperation and working together within the auspices of international organisations such as the United Nations and the OIC.

In addition, Minister Shahid met with the Secretary General of OIC Dr. Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen at the side-lines of the meeting. Minister Shahid reiterated to the OIC Secretary-General the commitment of the Maldives to the goals and objectives of the organisation and reassured him of the full participation of Maldives in the activities of the OIC.

The Maldivian foreign minister also met with a number of bilateral partners during the Council of Foreign Ministers, including the foreign ministers from Palestine, India, Bangladesh, Romania, Jordan, Kuwait, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, and delegations from Iraq and Serbia.

The 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers concluded with the adoption of the Abu Dhabi Declaration and a number of resolutions. The meeting is held annually and is a gathering of foreign ministers of the member states of the OIC.

The 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers is due to be held in Niger in 2020.
