4 candidates defeated from primaries submit candidature forms

Four candidates defeated from political party primaries have submitted candidature forms at Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).

ECM confirmed only four candidates have submitted the documents seeking to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections when they reopened application opportunity following the Supreme Court order nullifying the amendment to the Political Parties Act, which states persons defeated in party primaries cannot compete at the relevant elections

The electoral body reopened application opportunity until March 4. The candidates include Abdulla Jabir, who submitted the case at the Supreme Court, Parliamentarian Mohamed Abdul Kareem, Parliamentarian Mohamed Abdulla and one candidate who defeated from Hithadhoo constituency. The four individuals submitted forms to compete as independent candidates.

While 406 candidature forms were received, 5 forms were eliminated and 8 candidates withdrew their names, According to ECM. Therefore, 393 candidates will compete for the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held on April 6.
