MITDC funds utilised in construction of a political party office

Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC) has revealed company funds were utilised in constructing a political party office.

The funds were spent on maintenance of the office, which was later declared as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, according to the audit report of MITDC. The audit report revealed since the written documents were not found, it is unclear whether the funds were spent on CSR projects.

Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director Mohamed Raaid said the audit report shows around USD 130,000 from MITDC was spent on the construction of a political party office. Raaid revealed the documents show the funds were not spent on the maintenance of a MITDC property. He said an investigation is carried out by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), adding a board member and a staff involved in the case were suspended in January.

PSM News has further learnt the funds were utilised for the maintenance of the building housing the main office of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

MITDC is a 100 percent state-owned company mandated to support and foster the development and growth of the mid-market segment of the tourism industry established in 2016 by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
