Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated Maldivians are less appreciative of water and tend to waste water as Maldivians are privileged with water. The environment minister made the remarks during the children's evening held at Mathiveri in Alifu Alifu Atoll commemorating World Water Day 2019.
Addressing the function, Environment Minister Hussain Rasheed said although the water system established in the country is very expensive, the service is provided with a relatively low price. Speaking in this regard, he said the low water bills have increased wasting water appealing all citizens to appreciate water.
Noting even though getting water in Maldives is very easy, there are countries that do not get sufficient amount of water, the minister called to teach kids to stop wasting water. Moreover, he highlighted water projects will commence in 83 islands, adding about a population of 60,000 will be provided with safe water, upon completion of the projects.
Meanwhile, addressing the ceremony, World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative to Maldives Dr. Arvind Mathur said water is a human right and appreciated the efforts of the government to ensure safe water to all citizens.
World Water Day, marked on March 22 every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. This year's theme, "Leaving No One Behind", adapts the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit.
