Islamic Ministry declares 1st of Ramadan as May 6

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has declared the 1st of Ramadan as May 6.

It was reported the new moon was not seen in any part of the country today, making tomorrow, May 5, the last day of Shaubaan, as per the Islamic lunar calendar. As next Monday correspond as the first day of Ramadan, the President’s Office has previously announced tomorrow as a government holiday.

On the directive issued by the President’s Office, it stated the decision was made to give all citizens and Muslim residents in the Maldives time to make preparations for the beginning of the holy month.

Furthermore, the President’s Office has also announced government working hours during the month of Ramadan will be from 0900 hours to 1300 hours. Upon the adjustment, the president advises all government employees plan their working schedule to fit the official hours during the month of Ramadan.
