Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has revealed the number of Maldivians choosing maritime jobs abroad have decreased significantly.
Speaking on the maritime sector of Maldives, Minister of State for Transport and Civil Aviation Ahmed Adhil noted over a thousand Maldivians were employed in maritime jobs abroad. However, the state minister said the number stood at 283 in 2017 and 273 in 2018.
State Minister Adhil expressed the administration is planning to conduct programmes to train seamen. He revealed the administration aims to train 60 Maldivians in 3 year, who would potentially take maritime jobs, including deck officers and engineers.
With its own national shipping line, Maldivians earned well from maritime jobs in the past.
