Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has levied a fine of over USD 38,900 on Fenaka Corporation Limited, the state utilities company, over installing generators in five islands without carrying out due Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
Fenaka was fined for installing generators in the islands of Thakandhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, Finey in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Henbadhoo and Maalhendhoo in Noonu Atoll and Kendhoo in Baa Atoll, according to a press briefing from EPA. These projects were carried in 2017 and 2018.
EPA ordered FENAKA to settle the fine within a month. EPA further explained the issue was forwarded earlier this year and FENAKA conceded that no EIA was completed for these 5 projects.
Fenaka later issued a press briefing to explain the installation of generators in 5 islands were carried under the previous administration. Fenaka also clarified the issue was explained to EPA by the company and discussed corrective measures.
Speaking to Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Climate, EPA admitted they were politically influenced in the previous administration and some projects ignored EIAs completely, while others ignored recommendations of EIA reports.
The current administration has assured to provide legal authority for EPA to ensure that it functions as an independent institution.
