Banning MDN not enough, strict action must be taken: Opposition

Opposition parliamentarians has called for action against executive staff of Maldives Democracy Network (MDN) which published the report that mocked Islam. Parliamentarians from Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) highlighted banning the non-governmental organisation alone is not sufficient.

Speaking at a press conference, Parliamentarian Ahmed Shiyam called to hold MDN responsible for the report that mocked Islam and Prophet Mohamed. He further said the executives are leaving MDN and fleeing the country to save themselves from the consequences of their actions. He also raised concern as senior officials of MDN are serving the government in key roles.

Speaking to the press, Parliamentarian Ahmed Thoriq accused the government of conspiring with MDN to deceive the date the report was published. He further iterated the report that mocked Islam was published this year, and not during the previous administration.

Moreover, Parliamentarian Mohamed Saeed said the government is working for the benefit of certain individuals in key positions.
