Action will be taken against those who make threats of violence: Police Commissioner

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has said lawful action will be taken against those who make threats of violence on other individuals.

In a tweet following the ratification of the Second Amendment to Anti-Terrorism Act, Commissioner Hameed said as the authorities are taking action against those who carry out acts/speech against Islam, lawful action will be taken against those who make threats of violence on other individuals as well. He urged the public to monitor and to report on both forms of extremes.

The police commissioner made the remarks at a time Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated action will be taken under Maldivian laws against those who mock Islam. The home minister made the statement in a tweet following the temporary cessation of activities upon the Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) following widespread public condemnation of a report published by the organisation in 2016, entitled Preliminary Assessment of Radicalization in the Maldives, due to content slandering Islam and the Prophet Mohamed (PBUH).

Following the report, the public has called for strict action against the individuals behind the report.
