Maldives and Japan to further expand cooperation

Maldives and Japan have held discussions on further expanding the cooperation between the two countries in areas relating to economic and social development of Maldives. The discussions took place during a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Abdulla Shahid and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Motegi Toshimitsu in Tokyo.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Foreign Minister Shahid expressed appreciation to the people and government of Japan for the continued support to Maldives throughout its development journey. In addition to economic cooperation, both ministers also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest including maritime cooperation.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid conveyed greetings on the historic occasion of the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito. The Maldivian minister also congratulated on recent appointment of Motegi as the Foreign Minister of Japan.

Furthermore, the minister also expressed sympathies to the government and the people of Japan, on the devastation and loss of lives caused due to Typhoon Hagibis and reaffirmed strong support of the government and the people of Maldives at this difficult time.

Minister Shahid is accompanying President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on the on-going official visit to Japan from October 20-26 to attend the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Naruhito of Japan.
