Maldives committed to the ideals of the UN: Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has affirmed Maldives is committed to the ideals of the United Nations. The foreign minister made the remarks in a statement issued on the occasion of United Nations Day.

In his statement, Foreign Minister Shahid said Maldives praise the phenomenal rise of the United Nations which has become the epitome of multilateralism and a model for universality across the world. The principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations reflects the establishment of the organisation as a true champion for peace and security, development and respect for human rights, the minister said.

Furthermore, Minister Shahid said Maldives have unwavering faith in the organisation as a catalyst for positive change, and remain hopeful in its potential to address the diverse needs of a dynamic world. ‘’Our hope stems from the pioneering role played by the United Nations in bringing order to the world and fostering international cooperation,’’ the minister said.

The minister added Maldives have been committed to playing a constructive role within the United Nations since joining the organisation. As one of the very few countries to have graduated from the category of Least Developed Countries, Maldives have accelerated its accomplishments in the economic, social and political sphere by committing ourselves to the landmark development agendas, most recently the Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement, the minister noted.

On conclusion, Minister Shahid said as a passionate supporter of multilateralism, Maldives will continue to promote international cooperation that is based on mutual respect and understanding.
