Maldives discusses prospect of training Maldivian Imams at Moroccan Institutes

Maldives and Morocco have discussed the prospect of training Maldivian Imams at Moroccan Institutes. The discussions took place during a meeting held with Minister of Endowment and Islamic Affairs of Morocco Ahmed Toufiq as part of the official visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Abdulla Shahid. This is the first ever official visit to Morocco by a Maldivian foreign minister.

During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs of Morocco, both ministers discussed means of cooperation and coordination on the revival of the Islamic patrimony. Minister Shahid further applauded Morocco’s effort to raise awareness and promote a tolerant and balanced form of Islam.

Foreign Minister Shahid further highlighted on the historical links and common religious heritage shared between both Maldives and Morocco emphasising on the reference made to the Moroccan, Abu al-Barakat Yusuf al-Barbari, in the conversion of Maldivians to Islam in the 12th century.

During this visit, Minister Shahid will hold discussions on enhancing the prospering ties between Maldives and Morocco with his counterpart Nasser Bourita and other high level officials of the Moroccan Government. He is also scheduled to sign several agreements during the visit.
