Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has stated flight operations at Velana International Airport (VIA) increased to a record level on December 1.
MACL noted a record number of 226 flights were operated at VIA compared to February 24, 2019, which recorded 219 flights. MACL noted flights to and from VIA numbered 226 on December 1 and has so far been the highest number recorded on a daily basis.
The flights to and from VIA included 102 international flights, 121 domestic flights and more than three chartered flights. The flights on February 24 included 93 international flights, 111 domestic flights and 15 chartered flights.
A billion dollar project to develop and expand services at VIA is currently underway. The project includes a new runway, an international terminal, a seaplane terminal, a fuel farm and a cargo complex to render services more efficiently. The expansion project will also allocate more parking areas for aircraft.
Upon the completion of the expansion project, VIA will have the capacity to cater to 7.5 million travellers a year, according to MACL.
