Minister of Economic Develop Fayyaz Ismail has said Maldivian will begin direct flights between Addu City and Huvadhu Atoll on Sunday.
Speaking at a function held to sign the agreement of Addu City reclamation and road develop projects, Minister Fayyaz said after meetings with Ministry of Tourism and Island Aviation Services, the national airline Maldivian has decided to operate weekly 6 flights between Addu City and Huvadhu atoll. Fayyaz further said the administration has also decided to operate flights between Addu City and Laamu Atoll.
The minister said the decision to operate flights between Addu and Huvadhu was made as this is important for the development of Addu City although this may result in significant losses to the airline. He also said work is underway to align the schedules of Sri Lankan flights to Addu City and Maldivian to allow for interconnecting flights, adding it is expected to be completed by April next year.
Flights from Addu City will operate to Kooddoo and Kaadehdhoo which will increase international flights to the region. Minister Fayyaz remarked this will also contribute to better tourism development in the region.
