Maafushi land reclamation project inaugurated

The government has inaugurated the land reclamation project of Maafushi in Kaafu Atoll which is widely engaged in local tourism.

The project was officially launched by Advisor of the President, Mohamed Shihab. Addressing the ceremony, advisor of president said the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will fulfill the pledges. The project will benefit Maafushi as well the whole economy, Shihab mentioned.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam mentioned the project is widely linked with the future of Maafushi adding Maafushi contributes to the economy from its local tourism business. Noting the reclaimed land will open door for new jobs, the minister said the resort concept of land to be reclaimed will bring revolutionary changes to the outlook of Maafushi. Furthermore, minister highlighted the importance of prioritizing environment when conducting such projects.

The land reclamation project of Maafushi was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The project is allocated over USD 6.4 million from the PSIP budget of the government.

They are confident the project can be completed within 75 days, although the project must be completed within 249 days, according to MTCC. Under the project, MTCC will reclaim 25 hectares of land and mount revetment of 1110 metres.
