Maldives has commenced screening of passengers to tackle the threat of coronavirus that has killed 17 and infected nearly 600 people globally.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen said screening of passengers will take place at airports and seaports. In this regard, the minister revealed thermal cameras will be installed in 6 locations across the country, including Velana International Airport (VIA) and Addu International Airport. He noted a temporary isolation centre will be established at VIA, adding a permanent isolation centre will be established in Male' City.
Speaking to the press, World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative to Maldives Dr. Arvind Mathur highlighted an emergency committee has been formed to observe the steps taken to tackle the threat. He noted information about the preventive steps against the coronavirus will be made available in different languages.
The coronavirus first emerged late last year and originated from illegally traded wildlife at an animal market in the central city of Wuhan, China.
