Maldives Customs Service has revealed the import-export revenue decreased by 10% in January 2020, in comparison to the same period last year.
According to statistics published by Customs, the state generated USD 17.6 million as import and export duty in January 2020, which is a 10% decrease on the USD 19.6 million generated in January 2019. The total value of imported goods was recorded at USD 245.9 million, which was a 4% decrease on the USD 258.9 million worth of goods imported in January 2019. However, the total export value increased by 21% as USD 27.2 million worth of goods were exported in January 2020 compared to USD 22.5 million in January 2019.
Most imports in January were from UAE, with USD 46.4 million worth of goods imported from the country last month. Goods worth USD 42 million was imported from China, while goods worth USD 24.6 million was imported from India during January.
Thailand led the export list in January, with goods worth USD 15.2 million exported to the country last month, representing 56% of the total export in January. Goods worth USD 1.9 million were exported to both Germany and US, while USD 1.6 million were exported to France and UK. The exported goods mainly constituted of tuna products.
