President inaugurates Male’ City Streetscaping Project

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has inaugurated Male’ City Streetscaping Project.

The streetscaping project is aimed at repairing and reconstructing the streets of Male’ City for the convenience the residents of the city. The project will include reinstalling underground service lines, traffic lights and street cameras as well as reconstructing the streets to provide better convenience for pedestrians and vehicles. The project will be conducted in 416 streets of Male’ City, across the span of two years.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Solih stated the efforts to turn Male’ to a more pleasant city for its residents will be challenging, noting the streetscaping project is a major initiative by the city council and the administration. The president stated the current situation of the city is the result of building infrastructure in the city without any long-term plans. He added the streetscaping project will resolve many of the issues faced by residents of Male’.

The president also highlighted the project will be fully overseen by Male’ City Council, in accordance to the amendments brought to the Decentralisation Act. He said the administration will provide its full support and assistance to the city council for the project.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Male’ City Sifa Mohamed said the people of Male’ City appreciate the administration arranging funds for the project, noting the project will resolve all the main issues facing the city. She said major changes will be brought to the city under the streetscaping project.

The project is estimated to cost over USD 30.3 million. The project will begin with 8 roads in the West Park area.
