National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) conducts a workshop for principals and senior figures of schools in Lhaviyani Atoll to familiarise them on the role of educational institutions in fighting religious extremism.
The workshop held in Naifaru was inaugurated by Senior Policy Director at Ministry of Education Moosa Naeem. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Naeem highlighted the important role schools and educational institutions must play in the national-level to eliminate religious extremism.
The one-day workshop was conducted by NCTC, in association with Ministry of Education, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Southern Area and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Maldives. The workshop was held with assistance from the Government of Japan.
Sessions of the workshop were conducted by NCTC and Deputy Vice Chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) Dr. Saudulla Ali. The workshop was attended by 33 officials from 4 schools in Lhaviyani Atoll.
NCTC has conducted similar workshops for schools in the Greater Male' Region, Addu City, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Laamu Atoll over the past two years.
