MMA pledges increased efforts on eliminating discrimination between doctors

Maldives Medical Association (MMA) has announced the association will be increasing its efforts to eliminate the discrimination between doctors working in Male’ and the atolls.

Speaking on a programme aired on PSM News, Spokesperson of the association Dr. Mohamed Azzam said the issue of discrimination between doctors working in Male’ and in the atolls have always been a major concern, adding efforts have been exerted to resolve the issue in the past. He said the newly elected executive committee of the association targets to improve the relationship between all doctors working in Maldives, which will help to establish more discussions between doctors on the diseases found in the country.

Dr. Azzam further highlighted the importance of providing training opportunities for doctors as the field of medicine is an ever-evolving field with new discoveries made every day. Noting there are difficulties in facilitating training opportunities for Maldivian doctors, he said the new executive committee will be taking important steps to facilitate such opportunities.

The general election of MMA was held last week. Senior Consultant in Neurosurgery at ADK Hospital Dr. Ali Niyaf was elected as the president of the association, while Specialist Pulmonologist at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) Dr. Mohamed Ali was elected as the vice president.

The newly elected executive committee of MMA has pledged to increase cooperation and assistance provided to medical students. The association has also commenced efforts to conduct health awareness campaigns across the country.
