STELCO to operate sewerage system of Himmafushi

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has taken over operations of the sewerage system established in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

The ceremony held to take over sewerage operations of Himmafushi was attended by Chairman of STELCO Mohamed Rasheed and Managing Director of STELCO Hassan Mughnee.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mughnee said services will begin after the full completion of the project. He said the establishment of a system to resolve the issues faced by the sewerage system is currently underway.

The sewerage system established in Himmafushi will provide services to 261 households. The project to establish the sewerage system was contracted to Sierra Construction Private Limited and was launched in 2017. The project cost about USD 3 million and was funded by the Government of Maldives and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Under the project agreement, services should have commenced by the end of 2018, although the services have not begun to date.
