STELCO aiming to take over all utilities operations in Thulusdhoo

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has said efforts are underway to take over all utilities operations in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll, as part of its efforts to become a complete utilities company.

STELCO, which had been providing only electricity services in the past, has recently started to expand its scope by commencing water and sewerage services. As such, the company has taken over operations of the sewerage system of Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony held to officially take over sewerage operations in Thulusdhoo, Managing Director Hassan Mughunee said STELCO is fully prepared for the takeover, adding the administrative work to begin providing sewerage services to households is already underway. Noting STELCO already provides electricity services in Thulusdhoo, Mughunee said efforts are underway to take over the water supply services in the island as well. He said STELCO targets to become a complete utility company, beginning with the takeover of all utilities operations in Thulusdhoo.

Installation of the sewerage system in Thulusdhoo began in 2017. Under the project, the sewerage network, treatment plant and the administrative building have been developed.

President of Thulusdhoo Council Ahmed Anees said the people of the island have been eagerly waiting for sewerage services to begin, noting 9 months have passed since the sewerage system was completed. He added it is reassuring to see STELCO taking over sewerage operations in the island.

The project cost about USD 3 million and was jointly funded by the Government of Maldives and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
