Maldives Clean Environment has stated the waste management centre it developed in Zone 2 which includes Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani Atoll does not provide a solution to managing waste in the area.
A waste management centre was developed in the island of Vandhoo in Raa Atoll with funding from World Bank and the Maldivian government. Speaking to PSM News, Communication Specialist of Clean Environment Munaz Mubarik said the centre currently is lacking space to manage the waste produced in the region. Munaz stated the storage developed in Vandhoo is too small, considering the waste produced in the region.
Munaz further remarked some machinery is currently in the process of being upgraded given the time it has taken without the use of the machinery after being installed. He said once the machinery is ready, waste produced in Zone two will be collected and managed at Vandhoo. He urged the residents of Zone 2 to render full support in managing waste.
The capacity of the waste management centre is 40 tons a day. While an incinerator is ready for use in the centre, it is expected that the increase in waste produced will require additional space.
Additionally, the waste produced in resorts in the region is also collected in the island of Vandhoo. Although the services have been suspended currently for resorts, the centre will resume the service this month.
