Maldives prepared for worst case scenario regarding COVID-19

Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has stated the administration is prepared for the worst-case scenario regarding the spread of COVID-19.

Speaking at a press conference, Health Minister Ameen revealed the administration has decided to lock down any island with COVID-19 cases, adding medicine and health equipment have been sent to all islands as part of the preparation. The minister said the administration is prepared for the worst-case scenario, noting arrangements have been made to monitor the spread of flu and pneumonia across the country. He also said Maldives has the testing and treatment facilities for COVID-19, possessed by other countries as well.

In addition, Health Minister Ameen stated the administration has been acting in accordance with the guidelines set by World Health Organisation (WHO) to prevent an outbreak of the virus in Maldives. The minister urged the public to fulfill their responsibility in maintaining personal hygiene in accordance with the instructions given by doctors. He also called on the public to not spread misinformation regarding the disease, noting the issue is one of the primary concerns shared by WHO as well.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed said the administration will not hide any information regarding COVID-19 from the public, noting the administration has been regularly publicising the number of individuals who are tested and the results of the tests. The minister said although the safety measures against COVID-19 are expected to impact the economy, the administration prioritises the health and safety of Maldivian citizens above all. He added Maldives is currently on white alert regarding COVID-19, although the situation may change anytime.

Screening facilities have been established in all international airports and seaports as part of the efforts against the virus. Additionally, a National Emergency Operation Centre has been established to strengthen national-level efforts against COVID-19.
