Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has provided medical treatment to all prisoners who have requested treatments.
According to statistics from MCS, a total of 854 inmates sought medical treatment. The statistics further indicate a total of 177 inmates sought specialist medical treatment.
With the referral appointments from January, a total of 297 prisoners consulted specialist doctors. Most prisoners consulted orthopedic doctors which accounts for 17% of the consultations.
Furthermore, 16% of the inmates consulted ophthalmologists, 8.4% consulted dermatologists, 2.2% of the people consulted also saw surgical doctors, while 1.1% and 0.5% of inmates consulted gynecologists and maxillofacial surgeons, which were the least sought specialist services. According to the information from MCS, 4.5% prisoners sought inpatient services.
While MCS has stated it provided medical treatment for all prisoners who had requested treatment, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu has announced plans to set up a medical centre in Maafushi Prison to provide a better service to inmates. He stated the decision was made considering the challenges MCS face in transferring inmates to IGMH for medical care.
