Test flight lands at Maavarulu Airport

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has stated a test flight landed at the new airport developed in Maavarulu, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The ministry stated the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority is conducting the required checks following the test flight, adding scheduled operations are expected to begin on March 20.

Minister of State for Transport and Civil Aviation Ahmed Zuhair had earlier stated the newly developed airport in Maavarulu would facilitate easier transportation for residents of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, as well as tourists staying in nearby resorts and hotels.

The development of Maavarulu Aiport was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in March 2018. The transport ministry stated Maavarulu Airport would be completed and opened this month, noting efforts are underway to select staff for the airport.

The project was originally scheduled to be completed in 2011. However, the project was delayed for several reasons and was halted altogether for a long period of time after the termination of the agreement signed with the original contractor.
