Ambassador of China to Maldives Zhang Lizhong has stated discussions are underway between China and Maldives on ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in fighting the spread of COVID-19.
In a tweet, the ambassador said the governments of Maldives and China have been working hard to identify areas of cooperation in the fight against COVID-19. Highlighting the sympathy and support from the people of Maldives when the outbreak hit its peak in China, the ambassador assured China will reciprocate the support to Maldives during this time of crisis.
The global outbreak of COVID-19 began in Wuhan City, China last December. The situation of China has improved in recent weeks, with the rate of recoveries now exceeding the rate in which new cases are found. China has also started to close down the temporary hospitals which were built to cater for the new cases of COVID-19 when the outbreak began.
With the improving situation of COVID-19 in China, the Chinese government has begun operations to provide assistance to other countries affected by the virus. As such, teams of Chinese doctors have been deployed to Iran and Italy, which are two of the worst affected countries by COVID-19 in the world. China has also assured it will provide support to any country which requires assistance.
World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. Over 135,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported from around the world, with the death toll reaching over 5,000.
