The government of Maldives has collected USD 5 million as Green Tax in February 2020.
Compared to the USD 5.11 million collected as Green Tax in February 2019, the amount collected as Green Tax last month decreased by 3.4%, according to the statistics publicised by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). A total of USD 10.4 million was collected as Green Tax during the first two months of 2020. The amount collected contributed to 11% of the revenue collected by MIRA in January and February 2020. USD 10.2 million was collected by the state in the first two months of 2019.
The Tourism Act states tourists residing in resorts, guesthouses, hotels and liveaboards have to pay USD 6 per head per day as Green Tax. Maldives started collecting Green Tax in 2016.
MIRA collected a total of USD 92 million as revenue in February 2020, an increase of 12.3% compared to the revenue collected in February 2019. MIRA further stated the revenue collected increased by 2.2% last month, compared to the estimated amount. In this regard, MIRA stated the reason for the increase in revenue last month was due to the increase in Business Profit Tax (BPT) received by the state.
