Opposition applauds government's measures to contain COVID-19

Opposition parliamentarians have applauded the measures taken by the government to mitigate and contain COVID-19 in Maldives.

The minority leader, Parliamentarian Adam Shareef, said the government has taken thoughtful and considerable measures during this difficult time. He called on all politicians and political parties to unite in the fight against COVID-19. Parliamentarians met with Director General of Public Health Maimoona Aboobakuru and other stakeholders to attain the latest information about the measures taken in the fight against COVID-19 and to contain the virus after announcing a Public Health Emergency in Maldives.

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed commended the approach of the government and noted the efforts to reduce the impact of the global pandemic on the people. He called on the public to follow the instructions from authorities during this global pandemic.

During the meeting, Parliamentarian Adam Shareef said the efforts of the administration must be appreciated, calling on the people to be responsible and to follow all the instructions from the respective authorities. The majority leader, Parliamentarian Ali Azim, said this is the time to put aside all political differences and unite in the fight against COVID-19. He also called on all health professionals and skilled people to volunteer to serve the nation. He further said the administration needs support and unity in the current situation.

The Public Health Emergency declared in Maldives grants the Director of Public Health all powers to exercise any necessary measures. Authorities have instructed the public to observe personal hygiene and refrain from large gatherings in efforts in efforts to fight COIVD-19.
