The government of Maldives has revealed the decision to reduce USD 64.8 million from the expenses of the state.
Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) Mohamed Mabrooq Azeez announced major decisions of the administration made regarding the COVID-19 situation in Maldives. In this regard, the administration decided to reduce USD 64.8 million by cutting down every possible expense. The administration is currently monitoring the expenses that can be reduced.
Furthermore, the administration decided to slash 20% from the salaries of political appointees. The administration also decided to close down government offices from March 19-26 as a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19. Despite the temporary closure of government offices, the administration has decided the provision of all essential services to the public will continue without interruption during this period, by allowing the minimum number of employees necessary to carry out these functions, to come into work at the relevant institutions and agencies.
Meanwhile, in efforts to contain the virus, the administration has taken necessary precautionary measures. The measures include precautions to minimise the impact of the economy on Maldives.
