Parliament sittings suspended amid COVID-19 pandemic

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has announced all sittings have been suspended as a precautionary measure against COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the parliament, Speaker Nasheed said all sittings have been suspended as a precautionary measure during the State of Public Health Emergency. The speaker said any necessary sitting to be held would be held during the period despite the suspension of sittings.

The speaker advised parliamentarians to be on standby as a sitting may be held urgently. He noted the parliamentarians are not on leave, adding the administrative staff of the parliament will work from home.

The regulations of the parliament grant the authority of suspending sittings to the parliament speaker.
