Police to question and advise citizens on streets to return home

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed citizens will be advised to return back home instead of loitering on the streets.

Speaking at a press conference held at National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC), Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen stated all citizens are required to follow the instructions and orders of relevant authorities to stop the possible spread of COVID-19 in the country.

The administration has shut down government offices from March 19-26 as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19. Assistant Commissioner Naveen advised everyone to stay indoors and to refrain from going outdoors unless essential. He advised citizens living especially in the Greater Male' region to refrain from going out, adding individuals will be questioned and sent home if they were out unnecessarily.

Naveen said MPS are providing security for all individuals who are in quarantine and isolation. He said MPS is providing security in 19 locations, adding the security of those in self-isolation will be monitored as well.

Furthermore, noting the pandemic can be fought with joint efforts from everyone, the assistant commissioner reiterated his appeal to stay indoors. He assured actions will be taken against all individuals violating instructions during the Public Health Emergency declared in Maldives for a 30-day period.

Meanwhile, the President's Office has ordered all government employees to remain at home and to go outside only for emergencies and access to essential needs. The President's Office announced the drastic step has been taken to stop the possible spread of COVID-19 and also to implement the president's order to close government offices to facilitate social distancing.
