No plans to lockdown Male' city amid COVID-19 pandemic

National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has stated the government of Maldives has no plans to lockdown Male' City after closing businesses and stopping all movement.

Speaking at a press conference, Spokesperson of NEOC Mohamed Mabrouq Azeez acknowledged rumours that the administration plans to lockdown Male' City after declaring a public holiday from March 26-31. He said closing businesses that sell necessary items has never been the plan, adding no such discussions have been held.

The spokesperson further explained all decisions by the administration regarding measures against COVID-19 will be made public. Mabrouq stated the decision to close government offices is a decision to contain the spread of the virus and hence, asked the people to stay indoors and follow the instructions from government authorities. He called on the people to refrain from travelling and unnecessary movement as the purpose of closing government offices has been to limit movement and ensure people stay indoors.
