The government of Maldives has stated a daily TV programme, aired by Channel 13, was suspended for creating widespread panic and fear amongst the public amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
A statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) decided to censure the Channel 13 news outlet following persistent and numerous complaints from the general public on the broadcasting of its daily programme, which contained inaccurate and misleading information concerning the COVID-19 situation in Maldives. The ministry added the investigation conducted by BroadCom revealed the programme had created widespread panic and fear amongst the public, and that the content that was broadcast was inaccurate, false and unsubstantiated.
Furthermore, the foreign ministry said despite repeated appeals by the government to cease and to ensure accurate information be provided to the public during the State of Public Health Emergency that has been declared in the country, Channel 13 had failed to observe principles of fair reporting and responsible journalism. The ministry added the action was taken in the interest of public safety and well-being in responding to an issue of grave public concern.
The ministry stated Channel 13 has been ordered to refrain from broadcasting the programme for the duration of the health emergency. Channel 13 shall not broadcast information relating to COVID-19 on any of its programmes, other than the information that has been disseminated by the relevant state authorities, according to the order.
In the statement, the foreign ministry added the actions taken by BroadCom in no way impedes on an individuals right to freedom of opinion and expression, nor does it obstruct freedom of the press. The ministry called on all news outlets to be responsible and accountable in its reporting, to mitigate panic and fear under these challenging circumstances.
